The Story - Chapter 8 Leaders They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger… the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. (Judges 2:12,15) After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. (Judges 2:10,11) The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son… The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him... (Judges 13:3,24-25) Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines… Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived. (Judges 16:28-30) For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Chapter 7 - Be Strong & Courageous Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9) Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel… Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. (Joshua 6:21) “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. (Numbers 10:11-12) Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when he heard them his anger was aroused. Then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. (Numbers 11:1) But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land… “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” (Numbers 13:31-33) …your bodies will fall in this wilderness. Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness… For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ (Numbers 14:32-34) This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. (Exodus 2:23-25) Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die… (Exodus 11:4-5) …each man is to take a lamb for his family… they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses… The blood will be a sign… when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. (Exodus 12:3,7,13) Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground… (Exodus 14:21-22) I will free you from being slaves… I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
