The Story - Chapter 8 Leaders They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger… the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. (Judges 2:12,15) After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. (Judges 2:10,11) The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son… The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him... (Judges 13:3,24-25) Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines… Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived. (Judges 16:28-30) For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Chapter 7 - Be Strong & Courageous Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Numbers 11:1) But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land… “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” (Numbers 13:31-33) …your bodies will fall in this wilderness. The Plot of the Bible Pastor Bracken starts to introduce our Bible reading program The Story. Have you ever thought of the Bible as a story? Not a fiction or fairy tale, but The [true] Story of God? Perhaps when you were in school you learned that a good story has a plot line. At the beginning of the story, you meet the characters and learn about their problem. The story goes on to tell about the hero’s increasing struggles, until at the climax of the action the problem is solved. The end of the story then ties up loose ends and brings resolution. The Story encourages us to see the plot of the Bible. It focuses our attention on God and how God saves people from the problem of sin. The climax is Jesus, his death, and his resurrection. The end is heaven, where God’s people live with God in a new heaven and new earth. This plot line ties together the whole Bible. All the Bible characters and stories are woven together to tell The Story of God and God’s good plan for His people. Are you one of God’s people? Do you realize God has good plans for you? When we see the plot, we begin to see life and the troubles we face from God’s perspective. We begin to understand why this life has so much heartache and trouble. But we also discover that cooperating with God and His good plan puts us in a better position to grow spiritually and to be blessed by God. The Bible, which is what The Story is – a Bible in an easy-to-read novel format – helps us to position ourselves under the care and protection of God. The Bible is a GPS, God Positioning System, that takes us home to God whenever we get lost in the troubles of life. If we listen to the Bible, it will position us near to God, under God’s care.
